What If?:  Jonny Quest Meets Toby Danger



	It was a dark and stormy night in Palm Keys, Florida.  Young Jonny

Quest and Hadji were asleep in their room, and Race and Benton had just

finished work on a prototype of a magnetic forcefield generator. 

	"Well, Race-- it is finally finished.  We'll get up early

tomorrow, and begin testing." 

	"Looking forward to it, Dr. Quest.  Good night." 

	With that, the two men went to bed.  What they didn't suspect was

that the power cells of the generator were ever active, even though the

machine itself was turned off.  Due to the storm, there was violent

lightening outside, and it struck a transformer.  A huge electric current

made its way to the generator, and a reaction occurred, creating an

interdimensional gateway.

	Jonny was a light sleeper.  He heard noise in the storage

facility, and looked out the window.  He saw a glow, and decided to

investigate.  He went into the storage facility, and saw the glowing

portal.  His curiosity got to him, and he went through it. 

 He ended up in an identical storage bay, although the machine behind the

portal looked substantially different.  He went back into the house and

back to his room, but was puzzled to see that Hadji was not there.  He

shrugged, thinking the young Indian boy was up getting a midnight snack,

so he turned over and went back to sleep. 

	The next morning, Benton and Race were up early to test the

generator.  Hadji was already downstairs and eating breakfast.  Just then,

a young boy identical to Jonny (only with brown hair), walked into the

kitchen. 

	"Dad!  I had the strangest dream last night!  Geez!  What happened

to your hair?  Did you get into Sandra's hair color?  Geez, Dash!  Did you

hit the Clorox and bleach yours out?  Who's the Indian kid?" 

	Everyone looked at each other. 

	"I could ask you what this is all about, Jonny, and how you

managed to color your hair brown.  This is not funny." 

	"Jonny?  Who's Jonny?  I'm Toby!  Man, you guys have a weird sense

of humor this morning!"

	"Toby!  Time to get up for breakfast!" shouted Dr. Vernon Danger. 

	"Toby?  Funny, dad!" said Jonny, coming down the steps.  "Dad! 

Your hair!  You look like you've aged fifty years!  Race!  When did you

color yours?  Who's the girl?" 

	"Very funny, Toby.  You look like you've dumped Clorox on your

hair." 

	"I'll fix it, Dr. Danger." said Sandra. 

	"Danger?" 

	"Ok, Toby!  Joke's over!" 

	"I'm not Toby!  I'm Jonny Quest!" 

	"Kid's got quite a sense of humor, doc!" 

	"Race!  I'm not joking!" 

	"The name's Dash, son.  Dash O'Pepper." 

	"Where's Hadji?  Who's the girl?" 

	"Man, you're weird!  Have amnesia this morning?  I'm Sandra!" 

	"Enough of this," said Vernon.  "We need to test the electronic

cheese slicer." 

	"Cheese slicer?  What about the force field?" 

	"Give it up, Toby.  Everyone is ignoring you." smarted Sandra.

	"Jonny's acting awfully strange, Dr. Quest." said Race as they

were walking into the storage facility. 

	"My God!  What is that?!" asked Benton.  "A portal?" 

	Race and Benton looked at each other. 

	"Interdimensional, maybe?" asked Benton. 

	"That would explain it it Jonny went through it and another boy

came through." observed Race.

	"What is that glowing thing in front of the cheese slicer?" asked

Dash.  "A blue wall?" 

	"A gateway, perhaps." observed Vernon. 

	They looked at each other. 

	"Toby..."

	Both families met in their respective houses on both sides of the

portal and had identical conversation about everyone going through the

gate, although both doctors decided to test their machines first, thinking

it might close the gate and switch the boys back.

	"Doctor, the cheese slicer is inoperable." said Dash. 

	"That stupid blue thing must be responsible.  I didn't want to

risk anyone by going through it, but I may have to." 

	"All of us will, doc.  We need to see what's on the other side."

	"Doctor, the field generator is inoperable." said Race. 

	"That portal must be responsible.  I didn't want to risk anyone by

going through it, but I may have to." 

	"All of us will, doc.  We need to see what's on the other side."

	Both families went into the storage bays, and went into the

portals.  Both families appeared in a blue zone, in which both sides of

the portal could be seen.  Both families were speechless as they went to

examine their counterparts.  Jonny and Toby stared at each other, as

did Benton and Vernon, and Race and Dash.  Sandra and Hadji were left

wondering why they were the "oddballs". 

	"Dad!" both boys shouted as they ran back to their fathers. 

	Both doctors started to speak simultaneously. 

	"I'm Doctor--" 

	Both of their mouths opened, and finally, Benton spoke first. 

	"Benton Quest." 

	"Vernon Danger." 

	"I believe you met my son, Jonny." 

	"And you met Toby." 

	"Meet my assistant Race Bannon, and my adopted son Hadji, and

Jonny's dog, Bandit." 

	"My assistant, Dash O'Pepper, adopted daughter Sandra, and Jules

the cat." 

	"It seems we invented machines that were affected by the storm

last night, and created a gateway."  said Benton. 

	"So that's why my cheese slicer doesn't work." commented Vernon. 

	"Cheese slicer?" asked Benton. 

	The Quest family all looked at each other. 

	"Of course!" exclaimed Vernon, pointing to the gate where his

gigantic cheese slicer was visible. 

	"There is nothing more important to the well-being of the world

than for every government in the world to possess one.  The world cannot

survive without cheeeeese!!!" 

	Jonny spun his finger next to his temple in the "he's crazy"

gesture. 

	"Heey!  You can't say that about my dad!" screamed Toby. 

	"Your dad is crazy!  What's anyone going to so with a gigantic

cheese slicer?" asked Jonny. 

	"Slice giant cheese, stupid!" 

	The boys started fighting. 

	"Boys!" shouted Race and Dash together, as they went to separate

them. 

	"Like a force field does any good!" smarted Toby, sticking his

tongue out at Jonny. 

	Bandit started growling at Jules, and jumped from Hadji's arms and

started chasing him. 

	"Stupid dog!" whined Sandra. 

	"Heey!" snapped Hadji. 

	"I think it would be a good idea to go back to our respective

dimensions." suggested Benton.  "If we can close the gate, our machines

should work.  If we shut down the power cells on them completely, that

should close it up, then they should work once restarted." 

	Vernon nodded, and both families went back to their respective

sides. 

	Benton entered the correct sequence and powered down the

generator, and Vernon unplugged his cheese slicer.  The gates on both

sides disappeared, the scientists restarted their machines, and both

worked successfully.  Benton had created the world's first

forcefield, and Vernon made it possible for the world to have sufficient

amounts of giant cheese.  Both families' experiments were successes, and

they all lived happily ever after.
