[INT PALM KEY COMPOUND NIGHT]
[Pearl is on the telephone, obviously frustrated, sitting crosslegged on the floor of the hallway, arguing with an overseas operator]
PEARL: (to the phone) Could you please keep trying to get through? (pause) Yes, I know, you've told me all the circuits to Bangalore are busy, but--oh, bother! (hangs up the phone)
[Laughter comes from the next room; Jonny and Jessie are watching USA Up All Night]
{Music intro}
[Pearl looks in on them and smiles, but doesn't say anything to them. A dim roll of thunder sounds from outside; Pearl walks to the large front window and looks out at the stormy sky.]
Hello
Can you hear me?
Am I getting through to you?
[Pearl is still looking outside, and a dim and flickering image of Hadji appears beside and behind her. He's looking at her and singing to her, but she takes no notice.]
Hello
Is it late there?
[More laughter from the other room, and the Hadji-image glances over his shoulder briefly]
There's a laughter on the line
[He returns his attention to Pearl]
Are you sure you're there alone?
I'm trying to explain
Something's wrong
[His hand brushes against her cheek]
You just don't seem the same
[Pearl sighs deeply, as though she sensed his touch in some way]
Why don't you, why don't you
Go outside, go outside
[Pearl walks to the door and opens it as the rain begins to fall]
Kiss the rain
Whenever you need me
[Hadji's image appears before her, as though projected onto the haze of the downpour]
Kiss the rain
Whenever I'm gone too long
[Pearl is looking up and doesn't see him]
If your lips feel lonely and thirsty
[she holds her hand out, catching a few of the first raindrops]
Kiss the rain
[Hadji reaches out as if to take her hand]
And wait for the dawn
[she pulls her hand back before he can touch her and tastes the raindrops on her fingers]
Keep in mind we're under the same skies
[the clouds roll by overhead, rain pouring from them, driven by lashing wind]
And the night's as empty for me as for you
[Hadji holds his arms out to Pearl, who still doesn't see him]
If you feel you can't wait till morning
Kiss the rain, kiss the rain, kiss the rain
[Pearl steps back inside and closes the door]
Hello
Do you miss me?
[she brushes damp strands of hair from her face as she walks down the hall]
I know you say you do
[she pauses and reaches for the phone]
But not the way I'm missing you
[lightning flashes, and she decides against trying to call again]
What's new?
[she moves in front of the window again]
How's the weather?
[She looks out, and sees the reflection of her face in the glass]
Is it stormy where you are?
[Hadji's reflection superimposes over hers, and he's still singing to her, but she doesn't see him, and she moves away]
I'm so close but it feels like you're so far
[Hadji's reflection looks after her, reaching for her as if trying to reach out from the glass]
Oh, would it mean anything
[she looks longingly at the phone again]
If you knew what I'm left imagining
[Hadji closes his eyes, as if concentrating intensely]
In my mind, in my mind
[Pearl starts suddenly, looking wide-eyed at the window]
Would you go, would you go
[she glimpses Hadji's reflection in the glass before it vanishes]
Kiss the rain
[she rushes to the front door again]
And you'd fall over me
[she flings it open and, heedless of the downpour, runs outside]
Think of me, think of me, think of me, only me
[she closes her eyes and turns her face up to the sky]
Kiss the rain
[she lets the rain fall on her face]
Whenever you need me
Kiss the rain
[ghostly arms encircle her from behind, gathering her close]
Whenever I'm gone too long
[she keeps her eyes closed, but a joyous smile comes to her face]
If your lips feel hungry and tempted
[she reaches up and behind her and gently touches Hadji's face]
Kiss the rain and wait for the dawn
[Hadji is insubstantial still, but obviously Pearl can sense his presence now]
Keep in mind we're under the same skies
[she keeps her eyes closed and turns in his arms]
And the night's as empty for me as for you
[eyes still closed, Pearl reaches up to take Hadji's face tenderly in her hands]
If you feel you can't wait till morning
[they share a long, lingering kiss]
Kiss the rain
[the rain slacks off, and Hadji's image grows misty, almost invisible]
Kiss the rain
[[the rain stops, and Hadji fades away completely]
Kiss the rain
[Pearl opens her eyes, tears and raindrops mingling on her smiling face]
Kiss the rain, kiss the rain, kiss the rain
[a phone rings from inside the house]
Kiss the rain
[Pearl runs back inside, soaked through and not caring in the least]
Kiss the rain
[She snatches the phone from its cradle and listens eagerly.]
Hello
Can you hear me?
[she beams and settles down on the floor beside the hall phone]
Can you hear me?
[the camera pans back, and she's nodding eagerly as she listens to Hadji on the other end]
Can you hear me...?
