Jessie opened her eyes. She squinted at the clock. 10:03.
Another day at the Quest compound. She rolled out of bed, and
wandered out into the hall, in search of the bathroom. She saw Hadji
walk out of his room, still half asleep. He was wearing crumpled black
boxers, and his ponytail was a mess. She smiled sleepily at him.
     "Good morning."
"Good morning to you, Jessie." He yawned, and stretched his hands
above his head.
"Is there anything planned for today?" She wondered.
"Not that I know of." He reached for the bathroom door handle, and
turned it.
Rathika was inside, tying her robe.
"Oh!!" Hadjis face turned a bright red. "Excuse me."
"Thats okay." She breathed. "I dont mind showing a little skin
for my handsome hunk of love." She ran her finger across his bare
chest, uttering a noise halfway between a growl and a purr.
Jonny, who had materialized from the other bathroom, found this
extremely funny. Jessie just snickered.
Rathika walked on down the hall, swaying her hips. She stopped
when she came to Jonny. She ran a finger along his chin. "You have a
gorgeous brother, sexy." She twirled into her room, and slammed the
door shut.
Hadji quickly found refuge in the bathroom. Jonny looked
surprised, and Jessie burst out laughing. It was a normal day.

Hadji came down for breakfast an hour later. He found all of his
friends dressed, and eating. Race was reading the sports page, Dr.
Quest had an editorial. Jessie and Rathika were sharing a page and
laughing, and Jonny had the comics. Hadji reached for the cereal
nearest to him. Captain Crunch. He poured it in his bowl, and noticed
the amused expression on Rathikas face. She said something quietly to
Jessie, that made Jessie burst out laughing. Knowing that they were
laughing about him and probably his cereal, he swore revenge.
"Race and I will be at a convention today." All the kids perked
up.
"And we expect you to behave while we are gone." Race cautioned.
"Dont worry Race, we will be fine." Hadji tried to keep from
letting the joy show in his voice.
"Yeah, well stay out of trouble." Jonny shot glances at Rathika
and Jessie as he talked.
"Good." Dr. Quest replied, "Thats what I expect to hear."

Jessie wandered into the TV room a half an hour later. "The Dads
are officially gone."
"Okay." Jonny was sitting on the couch, eating popcorn from a bowl
in his lap.
"What do you want to do?" Rathika asked, her eyes never leaving the
screen. She was snuggled up against Jonny, eating his popcorn. Hadji
was sitting by her feet. He glanced up at Jessie.
      "Any ideas?"
"Well." She thought, "We havent been camping in a while."
"That would be slammin!!" Jonny exclaimed. He and Hadji could
play tricks on the girls. Realizing he ran out of popcorn, he jumped
up.
"Hey!" Rathikas head hit the bottom of the couch, she vainly
tried to grab Jonny with her flailing arms. "Come back here pillow!!"
"Hmmmm." Hadji paused. "Thats an interesting name for Jonny."
She tossed a pillow at his head, but he caught it perfectly, and
smacked her with it. She jumped up, and began pelting Hadji with
pillows. Jessie leaped into the fray, and Hadji managed to sneak out.
The girls attacked each other, sending pillows and feathers flying.
"Ohhhhh.." Jonny said from the doorway, "Cat fight!"
"Cat fight?!?!" Both girls indignantly replied.
"Hey!" Jessie exclaimed, "We do NOT cat fight!"
"We dont need to." Rathika added.
"Hmmmm." Jessie paused, "I should teach you some moves Race
taught me."
"Lets go!!" They disappeared from sight.

Hadji wandered into the TV room a half hour later. Rathika was
sitting on the couch, staring at nothing. She had a strange expression
on her face, something Hadji couldnt place.
     "What are you thinking about?"
She turned to glance at him, and he grew angry and upset. As soon
as she heard his voice, her expression completely changed. She smiled
up at him, in a friendly, carefree way.
Hadji felt betrayed, and annoyed. It was as though she were lying
to his face. She masked all her true feelings, only allowing the others
to see what she wanted them to. He hated that. Wished she would stop
being so deceitful. It was hard to talk to someone who you couldnt
tell was lying. You always wondered when she spoke the truth. With the
others, they would show their feelings, say what was on their mind.
Rathika never did anything of the sort. And you couldnt figure it out,
as with the others. You were always guessing, always wondering what
went on in her head.
"You look upset Hadji. Is something wrong?" She blinked at him.
Was she teasing him? could she tell? Was she really concerned?
He didnt know, and he couldnt tell. She kept that maddening, stupid
expression on her face.
"Come sit down." She patted the cushion beside her. He slowly
sat down, still watching her, trying to guess her next move.
"Why dont you ever show us your feelings?" She didnt blink,
didnt react. She just smiled lightly.
"Im not?" She said, confused, but obviously not confused.
"I know what it was like to be a street rat Rathika. I was one."
"Really? I never would have guessed." She took it without
comment, without any emotion. He felt as though she didnt care.
"I can understand how terrible life is on the streets."
"Poor Hadji." She sniffed, "All alone on the streets."
"And I understand how hard it can be."
She wrapped her arms around him. "There. There. You are safe
now. You have a nice home, and a warm bed. And plenty of good food."
She cooed to him like a mother. "No one can hurt Hadji while his is in
his little home."
     Now he was really confused.
"Oh, am I interrupting something?" Jonnys mouth curved in a
sarcastic smile.
"Oh!" Rathika sat back. "Hadji and I were about to have
unrestrained passionate sex on your couch." She paused. "Would you care
to join us?"
"Sure!" Jonny jumped over the couch, and landed between his two
friends. Rathika was giggling, and Hadji was too confused to really
react.
"Youre so cute, Jonny." Rathika started tickling him. "Too
cute."
      "Stop! Stop!" Jonny gasped.
"Why yes you are!! Yes you are!!" She using baby talk. Jonny
was in heaps on the floor. He somehow managed to pull himself away.
"Ack!! Its a witch!! Burn the witch!!!" He pulled her off the
couch. She grabbed for his leg, and he cleared the coffee table, and
took off running.
"Whew." Rathika plopped back down on the couch.
"Arent you going to chase him?" Hadji wondered.
"Oh! Good heavens!! No, my dear. Why on earth would I do that
for?" She peered at him quizzically. "If I went through all that
trouble to get him to leave, why would I want to see him again?"
He shook his head. A normal day.
